About Me
Tony Ibekwe is the Founding Partner of the Firm. He obtained an LL. B (Hons) Degree from the University of Benin in 1987 and was called to the Nigerian Bar with Honours in 1988. He also holds a master’s degree in Banking and Investment Law from the Lagos State University and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Nigeria.
Experience
Tony has vast experience in legal services and company secretarial duties in the Nigerian banking industry, having spent twenty-four years as Legal Officer, culminating in his holding the position of Company Secretary/Legal Adviser of two banking organizations. He also held the position of Head, Legal Services in two other banks.
While working as the Company Secretary/Legal Adviser of the banks, he advised on several significant banking, project finance and other structured transactions. As Head of the in-house legal team of one of the banks that consummated a merger in the banking industry, Tony garnered substantial experience in the process. He was also regularly involved in several complex debt restructuring transactions.
He was involved in advising the Board on compliance issues and adherence to applicable rules and regulations; was largely responsible for the preparation and safekeeping of all resolutions and all other registers of the company and Minutes of the Board meetings. Keeping and securing the safety of the company seal, preparing and securing the approval, signing and sealing of all agreements, legal forms and other official documents and filings on behalf of the company. As an experienced company secretary, he understands the importance of corporate governance structures, mechanisms and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
During his stint in active Legal Practice, Tony handled several complex litigations and acquired useful skills in negotiation which he often deployed in the interest of clients. He brings on board several years of experience garnered from active Legal Practice and a long stint in the banking industry. He has attended many courses both locally and internationally. He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association and the International Bar Association.
